Music Quotes

The whole problem can be stated quite simply by asking, “Is there a meaning to music?” My answer would be “Yes.” And “Can you state in so many words what the meaning is?” My answer to that would be, “No.” ~Aaron Copland

Here are some quotes stating what music is. The idea about what music is to one person has already been discussed but the importance of how and what the meaning of music is to a person cannot be stressed enough. Some people may not know how to say what they feel the meaning of music is so they can speak through what others have said in relation to how they feel.

If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would not bother trying to say it in music. ~Gustav Mahler

It is cruel, you know, that music should be so beautiful. It has the beauty of loneliness of pain: of strength and freedom. The beauty of disappointment and never-satisfied love. The cruel beauty of nature and everlasting beauty of monotony. ~Benjamin Britten

Music can change the world because it can change people. ~Bono

Music happens to be an art form that transcends language. ~Herbie Hancock

Music is higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy. ~Ludwig van Beethoven

Music should be your escape. ~Missy Elliot

One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain. ~Bob Marley

  1. Music is a form of art to me because it has ambiguity. The same piece of music may have different meanings to different people. It is like literature in a way. Different people may interpret it in different ways. This is an intrinsic possession of music. It is something music will always have. Its up to the listener to decipher in their own way what the music tells them. I for one am glad technology evolved in the ways that it did to provide music to people in its fullest glory. With crazy loud speakers!

  2. It was interesting to see what people from all walks of the music industry think about music. I especially liked the quote from Bono about music changing the world.

Music is like second language for people. It crosses over all economic and societal thresholds. It has meaning and can bring about different feelings to those who listen to it. Music is a part of all of our lives whether it be for entertainment, spiritual worship, cultural influences, or just to kill boredom, almost every person listens to and is affected by music on a daily basis.

Music is an easily accessible form of art. You can hear it right through your radio or by utilizing various other sources.

On one post about music the author stated,” If you look at a Picasso painting or a Brancusi statue you may like it, but you cannot understand what the author wanted to convey to the public. With music is completely different. Everyone can listen and percept the musical ideas. The music is an art open to all public”.

  3. Music is a form of art in a different language itself. It brings together different cultures; in many ways. Just like sports brings together athletes or former athletes; music is much stronger it brings everyone together. There is plenty meaning to music; but its in everyone hands meaning its what you interpret from it. Music is apart of everyone's daily lives whether its love songs, hate songs, or church songs. Every meaning is different. One person could be listening to the Climb by Miley Cyrus, and could think its about going through different struggles with life or different struggle with relationships. Music has much meaning because it can bring different values of life to a much brighter meaning.

  4. Music truly is a beautiful type of art. My fascination with it comes from a mathematical point of view. With every note, every chord, mathematics can be applied. I was a child who played piano, and later guitar, for a good part of my life, and the joy I got from learning these instruments was an incredible natural high. Music has many meanings to many different people. You could randomly select two people from the street and ask them to listen to a piece of Mozart and then ask them to describe how they feel. It's very plausible that the emotions both get will be different. Composers put their feelings into the notes, into the sound. Have you ever seen a concert pianist who didn't get into the music wholeheartedly? They feel the music reverberate throughout their entire being. I hope we never lose the art to compose and create magnificent works of art.
