Music in Video Games

Guitar Hero hit creating a cultural phenomenon. The video game sensationally has people who once wouldn’t think to pick up an instrument, now through their video games simulating just that. To a wide array of popular music, the player simulates the playing of guitar with a hand held device. It takes coordination matching notes from screen to the color coded frets of the guitar. Meanwhile you must keep rhythm and strum. Rock Band takes this a step further adding also drums and vocals. “The series has sold more than 25 million units worldwide, earning US$2 billion at retail, claimed by Activision to be the 3rd largest game franchise after the Mario and Madden NFL franchises”- wikipedia

Another musically influenced video game is Dance Dance Revolution. The player stands on a dance platform and while watching sequences of arrows, tries to dance and hit the corresponding arrows on the mat under the feet.

  1. This is an interesting blog about the social impact of guitar hero, but it doesn't really show any of the other details it needs to. The social aspect it hits dead on, but it doesn't say anything about the development of the game being an artist's work. The art of a lot of musicians is also affected by it because it helps expand their audience. Guitar Hero has a strong impact on artists and it isn't really mentioned in the blog. The evolution of the technology isn't really present here. There were many video games before guitar hero, but none really did much along the same lines as guitar hero. It's a great blog showing social impact, but it needed to include the effect on art, and science. It was interesting, short, and to the point. It just needed to include a few things.

  2. Guitar Hero is a video game that brings technology, art, and society together. Technology allows the game to be made, video game systems like Sega would never be able to have a game like this. The evolution of gaming technology made it possible for the game to be made. Art is used in the designing of the game, the way the band and club look that they are playing in look. As well as the fans and the guitar notes that come up on the screen when you are suppose to play them. Society has been greatly affected by games like Guitar Hero and DDR. Bars now have tournaments for those games and they are popular with people of all ages.

  3. Music is consistently surrounding each of us. It is so common that most of us probably never notice or tune it out. The addition of music to video games in excellent. It adds suspense, and emotion. Games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band get people involved like never before. Although it is just a simulation, I think it is great that these games expose players to what it is like to play. It sparks interests and allows people to express themselves… not to mention relax and unwind a little bit.
